Laarni Lozada was voted Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) Season II Grand Star Dreamer (to the wonderment and disappointment of Bugoy Drilon?).

Of course, being a Cebuano, I rooted for Van Roxas (remember the campaign I headed here?) but then maybe the rest of the tele-viewers thought that Van already has the smoldering looks and, if he becomes the grand winner, that would be too much in his favor. Hindi naman siya lang ang anak ng Diyos, no?

My other bet was Liezel Garcia, she with the exotic beauty and clean, distinctive voice. It’s a given that all the PDA scholars, including those who were voted out and those who made their exits voluntarily, have the makings of great singers.

But Liezel to me simply still stands out.

At first, I tolerated Bugoy’s antics and actuations but later they became distracting and irritating. I also noticed that he has become self-conscious and “feeling artista already,” to quote a friend, several days before the grand night.

Add to this the glaring favoritism by the mentors, ao my dislike for him grew night after night. I can still remember that scene where teachers Monet and Kitchie danced like fools while singing Alleluia after Bugoy delivered the song they wanted. Shame on them!

My reaction on his declaration that “in my heart I am still the Grand Star Dreamer”? No way!

While the top three winners (Miguel Mendoza completes the list) will enjoy the cash prizes and the other items that go with the top slots, I have this strong hunch that it will be the bottom three (Cris, Liezel and Van) who will enjoy a
longer stay in show business.

You can bet on that.

Laarni Lozada, a 22-year-old working student from Sultan Kudarat, was voted winner of ABS-CBN's top-rated talent show Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 Sunday night.

Laarni, who was dubbed the show's "Independent Woman" for her quicksilver temper and amazing vocal range, garnered a total of 651,696 votes or 35.21 percent to beat Jay "Bugoy" Bogayan, a canteen janitor and farm hand from Camarines Sur, who placed second with 547,760 votes.

It was an emotional victory for Laarni who struggled in the early part of the contest and was in danger of elimination in her very first week in the academy. She also got in spats with fellow scholars because of her moods but always impressed the audience and the judges week after week because of her performance.

After being declared Grand Star Dreamer, Laarni was in tears as she sang the show-stopping "Manalig Ka", which was included in the scholars' compilation album "Pinoy Dream Academy Season Two Scholars Sing Cayabyab." Her prize package includes a laptop computer, component and LCD television from Sony, kitchen showcase from Whirlpool, P1.5 million worth of Crystal Clear purified water store franchise, a brand new house and lot from Globe Asiatique and a check worth P1 million from ABS-CBN.

Second-placer Bugoy sang "Climb Every Mountain" and gave an emotional speech to his supporters for bringing him one step closer to his dreams. "Mangarap po tayo. Kahit simpleng tao pwedeng mangarap!" he said as his fans cheered.

Balladeer and former Philippine Idol finalist Miguel Mendoza placed third with 13.69 percent or 253,402 votes. Mendoza, who entered in the academy with his girlfriend Bea Munoz, had been in danger of elimination several times but was always saved through text votes.

Five-time Star Scholar Liezel Garcia placed fourth in the contest with 13.36 percent or a total of 247,346 votes. Garcia, an early favorite in the contest, thanked the mentors for the training while inside the academy.

Van Pojas placed fifth with 6.06 percent or a total of 112,065 votes. The 18-year-old Pojas (real name Van Louelle Pojas) had revealed early in the contest that he did not tell his mother about how long he would stay inside the academy since he had to skip school to join. He was later prevailed upon to stay in the academy by the PDA mentors.

In last place was Cristina Pastor, 21, with 36,487 votes.Lozada is the second PDA scholar to win the top prize. The first was Yeng Constantino in 2006.

Van Pojas of Cebu is declared Top 5 scholar in the Grand Dream Night of Pinoy Dream Academy season 2 Sunday night held at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Van received 112,065 votes or 6.6%.

In the first part of back-to-back Grand Dream Nights of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 last night September 13, at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, the top six scholars demonstrated what they could do as artists if they were named this as season's Grand Star Dreamer.

The scholars did not offer surprising performances, as in the first season's Jay-R Siaboc's "Kisapmata." And the scholars certainly didn't take any notable risks, like when season one winner Yeng Constantino sang her own composition, "Salamat," for the finale. But they were able to show how much they improved in a span of 13 weeks, proving that they could have a place in the country's mainstream entertainment industry.

Miguel Mendoza betrays his "versatile musician" label when he sang "Love is on the Way" and "Man on the Mirror," the type of songs he had been singing for the longest time. Juror Girlie Rodis was for Miguel. She said the "outstanding balladeer" had vastly improved since the start of his "journey," perhaps a reference to his stint in Philippine Idol two years ago. "Maganda naman ang performance mo, you delivered the song well. I can't say anything against it... Maski ano pa mangyari ngayong gabi, alam mo na magaling ka, may talento, pagtibayan mo na lang ang loob mo sa mga darating na challenges sa buhay mo," she said.

Meanwhile, Laarni Lozada (her new screen name instead of Laarni Losala) proved last night that while she may not be a perfect singer, she is clearly an engaging performer. Laarni's rendition of "Manalig Ka" and "Boogie Wonderland" may seem impeccable for the typical listener, but not to the keen ears of Headmaster Ryan Cayabyab. "Ang laki ng pagkakamali mo," he said, although he continued, "maganda pa rin ng dala mo sa pagkanta mo." The Headmaster also said Laarni is the most "blessed" of all the singers in the competition because "ang dami mong nagagawa sa boses mo."

Mentors and jurors alike have been saying all season long that the show's "Heartthrob" Van Roxas (formerly Van Pojas) does not possess the show's most impressive voice. But his songs "Hard Habit to Break" and "Probinsya" did for him last night what his previous renditions of "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" and "Tatsulok" did for him during the competition-prove that, with the songs, Van can shine as a singer. "Alam mo kung ano ang advantage mo sa lima na kasama mo lalo na pagkatapos ng performance mo ngayong gabing ito? You're biggest advantage is that you are a star. So go for it," Performance Master Joey Reyes said. 

Sexy sultry Cris Pastor had tagged as the season's resident female eye candy, but she is obviously more than just decorative last night, when she delivered "Out Here On My Own" and "Candyman" commendably. Voice mentor Monet Silvestre was on the spot with her critique of Cris' performance: "Sa buong three months ng academy, si Cris kasi nabansagan na sexy, maganda. Pero ang natutuhan naming mentors, at ng mga co-scholars, at ng buong bayan at mundo na rin, na si Cris ay isang totoong artist talaga. She's finally found her focus," he added. 

It might be too early to give Liezel Garcia the title "The Future of Philippine R&B." Still, her "I am Changing" and "Respect" were her typical fare. The season's resident juror Louie Ocampo, a Liezel fan right from the start, was clearly impressed. "I believe people are... destined to become stars. It may not happen to today, tomorrow, but I think you will have your time and you will be a star." 

Bugoy Drilon (formerly Bugoy Bogayan) performed last, with "Ligaya" and "Climb Every Mountain." "Angels did bring you here," Voice Master Kitchie Molina said. "You deserve to be here tonight and I hope will come true."

Now that we know what mentors and jurors have to say, it's time for the voice of the public to be heard. Who among Miguel, Laarni, Cris, Van, Liezel, and Bugoy deserves to be named the Grand Star Dreamer of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2?

Ex-scholars Chivas, Apple, Sheng, Bea and Christian were interviewed live on Uberture today. Majority of the former Acadremians felt that Laarni was deserving of the Grand Star Dreamer title. If Bugoy was their 2^nd placer, Van was their bet on the third spot.

When asked who among the Top 6 was a food enthusiast, almost all agreed on Miguel. Cris was a favorite choice with the question on who among them smelled the best.

The ex-scholars got all giddy when asked about their crushes in the Academy. Bea and Chivas remained loyal to their partners. While Christian crushed on Laarni, Sheng was attracted to Van. Apple had the most shocking revelation when she confessed that she liked Bugoy for his personality.

Also on the show this afternoon was the Top 6 rehearsals with Teacher Kitchy. The Voice Mentor taught the dreamers how to control their voices. Laarni seemed to have a difficult time doing so while Liezel was able to sing a line in one breath.

To start the party rolling, Headmaster asked Cris to sing one of her songs for Saturday. And to the last surprise, her mom entered the scene right in the middle of her performance and sang an excerpt from Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita.

Bugoy mom arrived too and shared with them her rendition of The Greatest Love of All. She wasnt quite familiar with the lyrics, but her song was indeed heartfelt. On Miguel moms arrival, she serenaded her son with Leah Navarro Kailangan Kita. Upon hearing her, it was pretty evident where Miguel got his great musicality. For Liezel, on the other hand, G-clefs oldie but goodie entitled I Understand How You Feel was interpreted by her mom.

During Laarni's turn, the event got quite emotional. It has been a long time since the two saw each other, so the Independent Woman couldnt help but burst into tears upon feeling the mixture of happiness and longing take over her. And in order to calm the lass down, her mom dedicated to her the song Close to You by the Carpenters.

Though Van's mom was not present tonight, his dad dropped by to show him his support and sing to him one of his favorite songs, Cant Fight this Feeling.

Surprisingly, the Top Six Scholars’ visitors just kept on coming. Aside from their beloved parents, former Scholars—Sheng, Bea, Christian, Apple, Iñaki, Bunny, Chivas, Poy and Sen dropped by the Academy to bid the Final Six good luck.

The Grand Dream Night will be the final performance night of the Top Six as official Scholars of the Academy; and whether they like it or not, it will also be time for them to finally bid the Academy that kept them for 91 straight days, good-bye. Van received an early wake-up call from Teacher Monet yesterday. Even before the sun went up, he was already on his way towards the airport to ride a plane that would bring him back to his native land”no other than, Cebu.

The Hearthrob couldnt hide his excitement all throughout the trip. When he reached Cebu airport, he was pretty amazed how many screaming fans went there just to welcome him home. He couldnt be more flattered to receive the support of his co-locals, and he couldnt find more ways to thank them enough.

His itinerary for the day was indeed filled with shows and guestings, but still he had time to roam around the province and feel the air of being home once again. After his engagements, he went back to the places that mattered to him the most. First, he dropped by his alma mater, where he was warmly welcomed by his friends and his brother. Then, he proceeded to the house of his beloved aunt who played a vital role in his life alone there in Cebu.

Aside from Van, Manila-based Miguel and Cris, too, had a shot at having a short reunion with their families. Miguel was joined by his mom and his sisters when he delivered the relief goods he sent to his chosen charity the other day. On the other hand, Cris had a short get-together with her family and friends last Tuesday at Check Point, where she held her show-for-a-cause with former band-mates from Wa-epek band. There, she also had a short reunion with her in-house sweetheart, Sen.

Just like Miguel and Cris, one of Vans agenda in Cebu was to share his donations to his chosen charity, the Cebu Task Force on Street Children, so before he even left his province, he dropped off his gift to the said foundation and amused the people there by imparting a song number.

The Top Six Scholars are now actively playing their roles in their community by merely putting their talents into good use, but still the fact remains that only one of them will go home victorious with the Grand Star Dreamer title.

As the end of the school year fast approaches, the Top Six Scholars couldnt help but reminisce some of the memorable experiences they had during their almost 3-month stay inside the Academy.

It started with Laarni invitation to Van for a mock boxing match after dinner. Teacher Monet recalled that ex-Scholar Christian used to be Laarni sparring partner. With that memory at hand, he also remembered how one of their hoarse plays turned into a dramatic dispute, which somehow caused an unspoken partition in the Academy.

Speaking of more disputes, they also remembered the heated argument that aroused between Laarni and Academy drop-out, Jet. They clearly remembered that incident when Laarni was taking a bath and singing in quite a loud voice while their former co-Scholar, Chivas, was undergoing an attack. She clearly remembered how harsh Jet commanded her to shut up. Aside from that, she also recalled how weird his argument was towards her coming up with issues like all her co-Scholars are pissed with her, while their topic in question was his rudeness towards her.

Aside from Laarni, Miguel too had his share in this trip down to memory lane. His controversial outburst towards ex-Scholar Bea in order to defend the Independent Woman made its mark on all of them. They classified it to be a real shocker, considering that Miguel had been nothing but a reserved gentleman inside the Academy.

They just couldnt believe how many unforgettable memories they had in such a short span of time. From being mere strangers, they were able to develop a special bond of friendship that they will surely remember for the rest of their lives.

Liezel and Van were interviewed by Billy on Uberture today. The Grand Dream Night was fast approaching and Van admitted to having mixed emotions about this. Though he was thrilled with the upcoming event, he would also miss his Acadreamian family. Van also adds that as soon as he returns to the outside world, he plans to make amends with his mother.

The Pride of Puerto Galera was caught off guard when asked about her just ok performances these past few weeks. After winning the Star Scholar title in 3 consecutive gala nights, people kind of had high expectations of her. However, she believed that the Star Scholar in her wasnt completely lost but is actually pushing to be better.

After each short interview, Van sang, Before I Let You Go for his fan Angel Gaetos while Liezel sang her rendition of Cristina Aguiluera I Turn To You for her fan Richard Espiritu.

Also on the show was Vans one-on-one with Teacher Kitchy. The Heartthrob seemed to have difficulty with his piece, particularly in singing high notes. The Voice Mentor encouraged him further and Van committed to his rehearsals. Meanwhile, Teacher Maribeth hasn't changed her stern and strict manner of teaching. She has been pushing the Scholars to perfect their choreography for the Grand Dream Nights, reminding them that the two-night finale is going to be the culmination of every single lesson they have learned in their three-month stay inside the Academy.

Top 6 Scholars' Dream Bigayan Concert for a Cause staged last Saturday, was a huge success.

Accumulating P266,400 from ticket and merchandise sales, the show aimed to raise funds for chosen charities.

Other than giving great performances, the Top 6's hosting chops were also put to a test when each of them got the chance to introduce a fellow scholar using the spiels they themselves wrote.

They also got to answer intriguing questions from Toni Gonzaga in a mini-talk show part of the program that certainly piqued everyone's curiosity.

Partial results of the text votes were also revealed during the last few minutes of the Concert for a Cause.
Voting for the Top 6 Scholars officially ends on September 14 on ASAP '08.

The back-to-back Grand Dream Nights of Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) Season 2 will be held on September 13 and 14 at the Cuneta Astrodome.

As another form of saying thank you to their Dream Mentors, the Top Six Scholars rewarded them plaques of appreciation last night. They awarded them based on the different ways they have touched their lives and their hearts. But to make the awarding ceremony a little more interesting, the Scholars thought that impersonating their Mentors would be fun”and based on the bursts of laughter they had last night, it seems that they got that right.

First to receive an award was no other than their in-house mentor, Teacher Monet. Laarni was the one tasked to mimic the said mentor, who they hailed on the plaque as their Giant Clown. From the way he walks to the trademarks he left to the Scholars, Laarni nailed it perfectly.

Being an admitted frustrated dancer, Mr. C was given a Happy Feet award. The Scholars just couldnt forget the Headmasters interesting dance move which his impersonator, Miguel, showed while doing Mr. C favorite stance.

Liezel, on the other hand, did a fine job impersonating Teacher Kitchy. Aside from the mentors famous padded-shoulder get-up, Liezel almost made a replica of an actual scene during one of Teacher Kitchy class. Being famously known for her constant reminder regarding the Scholars breath flow, they had given her the Breath Flow award.

Though all presentations were found fascinating, it seems that Van spoof of Direk Joey made all of them fall off their seats. Among all, it seems that Van had the most heartfelt performance. He was really into the character that even his audience couldnt deny that the lad is imitating their Media Performance Mentor from the quotable statements to the unforgettable moves. Before actually receiving his More than Words award, Direk Joey still couldnt help but laugh his heart out after seeing what his impersonator had to offer.

In less than a week time will be the actual good-bye, and the list of top three winners will be revealed. Iñaki and Apple hosted the event and were successful in enticing the crowd further for the appearance of the Top Six. The people cheered loudly for ex-scholars Bunny, Sen, Apple and Iniaki as they presented their well-loved pieces on stage.

As soon as Cris jumpstarted the final six solo performances, the crowd went wild. Miguel, Liezel, Bugoy, Van and Laarni followed after singing Mr. C originals. Ending the program was the scholars production number of Yeng Constantino, Awit ng Pangarap.

Though they were elated with their first mall show, nothing beat their mini-reunion backstage. The two groups hugged instantly upon meeting but they had to recover and compose themselves for the show. All were ecstatic at the warm reception of the people and are looking forward to more of these events.

It has been fun-filled three-month experience for all of them. In such a short span of time, great ties had been made, and knowing that they will soon be parting ways gave a little room for nostalgia on both parties.

The Top Six couldnt thank the Mentors more for their teachings and guidance. One by one, they shared their sentiments and reflections with regard to their stay inside the Academy. All couldnt help but feel privileged to work with the Dream Mentors, who happen to be some of the music industries biggest names. During Bugoys turn, he couldnt help but get a little emotional.

Aside from Bugoy, Teacher Kitchy too got a little off hand with her tears. She admitted that she got too attached to them, and merely thinking of the parting causes a mild pinch on her heart. According to her, she will never ever forget the times she shared with them, because she, too, learned a lot from them.

After all the Mentors thanked the Scholars alike for the experiences, they also gave them words to live by. According to them, a mixture of joy, sorrow and anxiety play around their systems as they think about the Scholars upcoming exit. Joy is for their victory; sorrow will be for their separation; and anxiety to the possible odds that they might face once they step out the Academy. They kept on reiterating that the real world is indeed cruel, most especially to showbiz commodities which they will soon become, so they better prepare themselves. They also kept on repeating that they will always be there for them, just like their real parents.

To lighten up the drama, the Scholars arranged a little surprise for their teachers. In honor of their Mentors and everything they have taught them, the Scholars prepared a short skit characterized by their impersonation of the Dream Team. Laarni played the role of Teacher Monet, while Van portrayed as Direk Joey. Who among them dared to mimic the Headmaster and Teacher Kitchy? They also got to answer intriguing questions from Toni Gonzaga in the mini-talk show part of the program that certainly piqued everyone's curiosity.

Meanwhile, the partial results of the text votes were revealed during the last few minutes of the Concert for a Cause.

As of 9:27 PM that night, Scholar A got 20.27% of the text votes, 38.98% for Scholar B, 11.28% for Scholar C, 20.28% for Scholar D, 3.15% for Scholar E, and 5.15% for Scholar F.

If you’ve had your fill of local contemporary music’s predilection for grungy pop-rock tunes and saccharine-flavored revivals, get a copy of “Pinoy Dream Academy Season Two Scholars Sing Cayabyab” for a hearty serving of new compositions from everybody’s favorite music man, Ryan Cayabyab.

More inspired than the recent “Ryan Cayabyab Singers” album, “Scholars Sing Cayabyab” contains delightful tracks that will have you singing along from beginning to end. If you liked the catchy playfulness and Pinoy wit of RCS’ “Ba’t ’Di Mo Sinabi?” and the optimistic vibe of KC Concepcion’s “Ngiti Lang,” you’ll find a number of tracks here that are just as easy on the ears.

Top tracks

The 11-song playlist—which includes the bonus track, “Awit ng Pangarap,” sung by “PDA’s” first Grand Dreamer, Yeng Constantino—is basically middle-of-the-road OPM. The collection’s top tracks, Jay “Bugoy” Bogayan’s ballad, “Paano Na Kaya?,” and Iñaki Ting’s “Ganun Ba?,” capture the album’s over-all musical spirit—the songs are playful, youthful, contemporary, and they ooze with optimism. Another notable number comes from the academy’s resident heartthrob, Van Pojas, who soars in the melodically complex “Another Goodbye Song.”

The group’s most talented performers are given beautiful but vocally demanding songs: Bugoy demonstrates complete vocal control in “Paano Na Kaya?,” a ballad that benefits from his R&B stylings; Laarni Losala shows off her range and versatility in the show-stopping “Manalig Ka,” and Liezel Garcia comes up with a sultry and polished rendition of “I’d Rather.”

Limitations

Interestingly, while the other scholars are given safe songs to mask their limitations, Losala is once again assigned a tune that requires her to show off her belting prowess. (On the TV show, she’s always required to sing similarly difficult songs, while a number of her less-talented “classmates”—with less-demanding tunes—struggle to stay on the note. Of course, it’s good to see how this stretches the talented singer, but it always wreaks havoc on her nerves.)

Like Losala, Miguel Mendoza is given a rousing “contest piece” (“Hero”), but the song is dragged down by a churchy arrangement and a heavy-handed interpretation. Cris Pastor (“Bakit Ganyan?”), one of the most improved scholars in the academy, and Bunny Malunda (“Narito Lang Ako”) sing safe, radio-friendly songs that are within their limited range.

Sen Nichols and Apple Abarquez sing the compilation’s two covers: Ariel Rivera’s “Wala Kang Katulad” for the former, and “Limang-Dipang Tao,” the classic OPM ditty from Mr. C’s groundbreaking “One” album, for the latter.

But, singing remakes is always tricky, because it presents the risk of being compared to their original interpreters. The fresh arrangement of “Limang-Dipang Tao” helps Apple escape that unfair fate.

Unfortunately, it’s Sen who, despite hitting all the right notes, suffers from the comparison. If a performer neither sings better nor brings something new to a well-loved hit song, he ends up sounding like a copycat—and that’s not something that would jumpstart a career in the performing arts.

So the so-called Cebuano/Visayan text votes and the perceived diehard texters are not products of the imagination, after all.

Cebuano Pinoy Dream Academy Season II scholar Van Louelle Pojas has been included in the Top 6, thanks to your votes.

Van’s close friend Hansen Nichols was dropped from the list for having garnered a lower percentage of text votes. But the support for Van does not end there, mind you, faithful and loyal Visayan texters.

Van’s handler Mario Colmenares immediately texted me to help seek further support for Van until the final stretch of the reality show on Sept. 13 (the awarding is on the 14th).

Forget the rumors about his sexuality or the unnecessary comments about his less-than-appealing looks. Jay “Bugoy” Bogoyan is, without a doubt, is the competition’s best male vocalist. What’s even more exciting is how Bugoy had no previous singing background. This 18-year-old college undergraduate is the only scholar who managed to break Liezel Garcia’s three-time Star Scholar run. Bugoy also has the distinction of having the highest score for a trio performance (”Yesterday,” with Van Pojas and Hansen Nichols) and a duet (”Muli” with Vina Morales). While Bugoy is only second to Liezel in terms of score average, he is so far more consistent; having been excluded from the top three only twice.

At his best, Bugoy is an engaging performer with the most mesmerizing voice. In fact, his “I’ll Make Love To You” and “Yesterday” are perhaps the season’s most memorable and successful performances to date. At his worst, as in his rendition of “Nakapagtataka,” he still managed to impress the judges. His diction and stage presence are his most obvious waterloo, but these never hindered Bugoy from delivering a show stopping performance.

Pride of Puerto Galera

Named Top Scholar for the week: five times

On paper, Liezel Garcia is already the clear-cut winner of PDA Season 2. She has the distinction of being the first Star Scholar of the competition; in Season 1, it was Yeng Constantino who got the highest score, and everyone knows that she went on to become the most successful alumna of the first batch. Liezl has the highest score average and has been named Star Scholar the most number of times. Yet, while Liezel is arguably one of the two best female vocalists in the competition, she lacks the confidence as a singer and as a potential celebrity. Liezel also failed to sustain her winning streak at the latter part of the contest. But, despite these, the Pride of Puerto Galera is still one of the favorites to win this competition.

Although Liezel lacks stage presence, making her latter performances predictable, her voice more than makes up for it, judging from her rousing renditions of “Listen,” “Count On Me,” and “So Much Love.” Even her less successful songs earned praises from the judges, proving that, even with her least inspired performances, Liezel has the making of a true singer.

Laarni Losala

The Independent Woman

9th Gala Night Star Scholar

On Probation: twice

Laarni Losala was more popular for her onscreen antics than her singing. Earlier in the contest, Suldan Kudarat’s “The Independent Woman” was under fire due to her numerous crying fits and arguments with a number of her co-scholars (particularly Iñaki Ting and Bea Muñoz). But while she managed to land in the weekly top three prior to the announcement of the Headmaster’s List of Ten, Laarni made her mark during the 7th Gala Night, with her flawed but nonetheless remarkable rendition of “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin.” It was surprising that Laarni was able to make the April Boy Regino hit sound fresh and exciting. However, it was more surprising that the mentors failed to recognize Laarni’s efforts when she was nominated for probation for that same song. Thanks to the face-off challenge, she was nominated for probation despite getting the fourth highest grade for that week. But the mentors chose to save Bunny Malunda, that week’s lowest ranking scholar, instead, earning the ire of loyal viewers.

That Laarni got the highest percentage of text vote for that nomination (an overwhelming 72.74 percent, a remarkable gap considering Miguel Mendoza, who had previously managed to score an impressive text vote lead of his own, was also on probation that week) is a clear indication that the voters felt she did not deserve to be on probation. An even more impressive feat: Laarni is the only scholar besides Jay Bogoyan and Liezel Garcia to get the title of Star Scholar for an individually-graded performance. Forget that her version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was forgettable. At her best, Laarni is clearly one of the few scholars in the Academy who deserves to be called Grand Star Dreamer.

Miguel Mendoza

The Romantic Crooner

Part of the 1st Gala Night Top Three scholars

On Probation: three times

Viewers expected great things from Miguel Mendoza, this season’s contestant with a previous reality singing show background (reminiscent of PDA Season 1’s Ronnie Liang). After all, he managed to finish fourth in ABC-5’s Philippine Idol. So it’s frustrating that Miguel, one of the contest’s early frontrunners, struggled to reach the final six, as if his experience on stage didn’t give him any advantage. Miguel’s best performance so far was during the 1st Gala Night, when he sang Luther Vandross’ “A House Is Not A Home.” Afterwards, however, he failed to follow-through, as he consistently gave safe, predictable, and bland performances of not so well-known ballads.

Even the grade of 9.06 Miguel received for his trio performances with Laarni Losala and Apple Abarquez was not impressive; performance master Joey Reyes felt the trio’s diverse personalities were evident onstage. He was also constantly outperformed by vocally-weak contestant (like Christian Alvear and Iñaki Ting). And even his “Sandra” during the 11th Gala Night failed to excite, although he had already performed the song on Philippine Idol two years ago. Instead, he was relegated as the primetime show’s filler, thanks in part to co-scholar and real life partner Bea Muñoz. Instead of showing of his singing prowess, Miguel and Bea merely showcased to the public their problematic and unusual (they’re in an “open relationship,” a fact Bea paraded in talk shows after she was eliminated). As a result, among the six remaining scholars, Miguel had been placed on probation the most number of times.

Like Ronnie Liang, Miguel’s previous reality show stint may prove to be an advantage. Miguel has managed to survive expulsion thrice due to his overwhelming text vote victories (75.97 percent against Iñaki’s 24.03, and 74.85 percent against Bea’s 25.15). And while he is yet to show it, the mentors and the jurors believe Miguel has to vocal capacity to tackle just about any song. Miguel, no doubt, shows promise as a versatile artist. That—plus his hopefully loyal fan base—might propel as one of this season’s big winners.

Cris Pastor

Hometown: Parañaque

The Singing Interior Designer

Part of the 8th Gala Night Top Three Scholars

Nominated for Probation: five times

Cris Pastor may be the only scholar in the competition who would benefit if the contest lasted a few weeks longer. Parañaque’s “The Singing Interior Designer” reached her tipping point late in the competition, when he sang the Jordin Sparks hit “Tattoo.” Previously, she had been trying to present herself as a seductive songstress with her sexy rendition of The Beach Boys’ “Papa Oom Mow Mow” and The Beatles’ “Come Together.” But while her Beach Boys cover impressed the judges, Cris’ succeeding attempts failed.

In particular, her take on “Come Together” caught the displeasure of resident juror Gerard Salonga. Her following performances were just as uninspiring; even her trio performances with Bunny Malunda and consistent top scholar Liezel Garcia received a lackluster grade of 8.32. But with “Tattoo,” Cris was able to prove that she deserves to be part of the final six. While she may be more known for her onscreen dalliance with Hansen Nichols and Iñaki Ting, Cris has a commanding stage presence and never looked awkward even when her vocals faltered. Her succeeding performances after “Tattoo” were surprising, proving that Cris is more effective when she tackles pop songs.

Those doubtful of her skill would argue her most successful performances (besides “Papa Oom Mow Mow”) were safe, but they were never boring. As if for penance, Gerard said he was blown away by Cris during the 10th Gala Night, and guest judge Girlie Rodis remarked during the 11th Gala Night that she improved immensely. And while she may be the scholar with the most number of appearance in the bottom four (and the lowest average among the remaining scholars), Cris managed to break the Liezel’s streak when she managed to land in the top three—an impressive feat, considering only seven scholars have managed to land in the top three for their solo performance. Cris is nowhere near Liezel Garcia and Laarni Losala in terms of singing ability, but she has proven that she more than vocal prowess on her side.

Van Pojas

The Heartthrob

6th Gala Night Star Scholar (with jay Bogayan and Hansen Nichols)

On Probation: once

Van Pojas has already been named as this season’s version of Jay-R Siaboc. But to dismiss Van’s singing is an underestimation of his talent. He is one of the few scholars who became part of weekly top three, and it helps that he was part of the trio that sang “Yesterday,” this season’s most successful performance to date. And while Van is not as consistent as Jay Bogayan, he proved early on that he has what it takes to last long in the competition. His rendition of “I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore” is one of the few that stood out during that 1st Gala Night, and is consistently named by viewers and Internet denizens as one of the more memorable PDA performances to date.

Van’s cover of the rock ditty “Tatsulok” may not be as flawless as Bugoy’s “I’ll Make Love to You” or as risky as Laarni Losala’s “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,” but it nonetheless showed that the show’s resident Heartthrob can sing a wide range of songs. While Van was awkward and conscious during his duet with Kitchie Nadal, Cebu’s pride might just have what it takes to break the predicted Liezel-Bugoy-Laarni finale.

Another Cebuano PDA scholar, Van Pojas, is in danger of getting expelled from the academy this weekend. This is another challenge for the Cebuanos to prove that our text votes really count and that the so-called Cebuano vote is not a hoax after all.

Van’s manager, Mario Colmenares, when told that there is no reason to feel scared of the possibility of his talent getting expelled. Van is one of the most popular scholars not only because of his talent but also, and more noticeably so, because of his smoldering looks. You can only wish that those loud applauses can be transformed into text votes.
So, Visayans, let’s show our strength. Text PDA VAN to 231 (for Smart, Talk ‘n Text and Addict Mobile subscribers) and 2331 (for Globe, Touch Mobile and Sun Cellular subscribers) and be counted.

Last night, the Top Six Scholars had a chance to evaluate their over-all performance all throughout their stay inside the Academy. Aside from assessing themselves, they were given a chance to evaluate their co-Scholars performances as well. Based on these assessments they had, they were requested to rank themselves accordingly on the numbered white board where their pictures were situated.

Cris awarded the Grand Star Dreamer title to Laarni. She decided to rank herself third, next to Bugoy, because she claims that among all of them, she has been the most improved. According to her, she intentionally didn’t aim for the top two positions because she is already certain that the two names she placed there truly deserves it more than she does. Bugoy agreed with Cris’ top two. He admitted that he is threatened by Laarni’s edge, technique-wise, but he claimed that he intends to use this threat to his advantage by challenging himself to strive harder and reach the top.

Laarni thought the other way around. For her, Bugoy is currently on the top position, followed by Liezel. She only ranked herself third because she believed that she still lacked what it takes to be hailed a Grand Star Dreamer. In between her sobs, she uttered that maybe her talent could only go as far as top three, but given the chance, she admits that she really wants to make it to number one.

Same with Laarni, Van and Liezel thought that Bugoy is currently on the roll inside the Academy. Though the Pride of Puerto Galera is confident with the uniqueness of her voice, she is not really sure if it is enough to make her worthy of the prestigious title. Van thought the same way. He claimed that he already gave his best shot, and it seems that it will never be enough to at least be of the same caliber with Bugoy’s.

Among all six of them, Miguel was the only brave soul who put his own name on the top most position. According to him, he is only being true to himself. He said that he is really determined to claim the title because it is the main reason why he joined the competition in the first place.

The Academy averaged all the Scholars’ ratings to come up with an unofficial ranking of the Academy’s Top Six. Bugoy was on the lead, followed by Laarni on second, then Liezel on third, while Van occupied the fourth place, and Miguel and Cris share the fifth spot.

Last Aug. 30 during the 11th Gala and Expulsion Night, Van Pojas completes the top 6 Scholars of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2.  Van stays in the academy after garnering a 54.58% of text votes over Sen’s 45.42% of text votes.

Now the official top 6 scholars of PDA season 2 are: Zhel, Bugoy, Laarni, Van, Miguel, and Cris. One of them will become the 2nd Grand Star Dreamer after Yeng Constantino of Pinoy Dream Academy. The text voting is now open for the public to choose who will be the new Grand Star Dreamer until September 14.

In the Scholars’ class with Headmaster Ryan Cayabyab tonight, they were taught how to sing with power. According to the Headmaster, with the finals night but a few weeks away, the Scholars were forced to learn how to sing with intense command. All of them lacked the right amount of energy to come up with a great show, and this is what Mr. C wanted them to focus on.

After the said activity, the Acadremians rehearsed a new piece Mr. C himself arranged. The said collection was a compilation of classic OPM hits like Kung Ako Na Lang Sana, Sana Maulit Muli, Kahit Isang Saglit, Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga, and Dito Ba. One by one, he asked the Scholars to sing their parts. All did a good job, that is except for Van.

In the said rehearsal, it seemed as if Van was out of focus. Aside from his poor knowledge of the song, he also had a slight problem with breathing so the Headmaster decided to pay special attention on him. His expression of emotions, too, was somehow problematic. Could his probationary status affecting his performance in class? Last weekend, Van and Sen were tasked to conduct dance lessons for the Little Dreamers. Inspired by Teacher Georcelle’s moves, the two lads went on dancing like pros. To start with, they initiated the warm up exercises. The two stood in front of the Little Dreamers so that they could easily imitate their moves. After the warm up exercises, they proceeded with the ramp posing activity. They administered the kids to fall in line and walk across the room and strike their best poses.

After walking their runway, the Little Dreamers were divided into two groups. One team was headed by Sen, while the other was held by Van. Sen’s group consisted of Angelo, Risie, Aubrey, and Amy. And since there were only seven of them, Van only had three members in his group, namely Philip, Kelly and Christina. As team leaders, Van and Sen were in charge of teaching the kids new dance routines, which they later on performed in front of all their Ate and Kuya who served as their jurors. Though they lack in numbers, Van’s team still won the competition with a total score of 45.

The best buds seemed to have worked well in mentoring the Little Dreamers in dance class, but it didn’t end the opposition raised by their probationary status. While they were hanging out at the garden, Sen joked Van regarding leaving the Academy. In a mocking tone, he told the Heartthrob to voluntarily exit instead of waiting until Saturday. Van didn’t mind the joke, but it was evident on his face that he wasn’t comfortable with the topic.

Back inside, Van couldn’t help but ask for reassurances from his co-Scholars. While playing around, Van tried to fish support from Bugoy and Cris. He asked them who they would prefer to stay inside the Academy. Since the two Scholars are close to both lads, they chose to keep their opinions to themselves in order to avoid unwanted issues.

Bestfriends Sen Nichols and Van Pojas appear to have delivered the weakest performance the other day during the Gala Night. It’ll be a tough time for both to compete against each others, since they are both bestfriends.

Speculations say that it’s time for Sen to kiss the Academy goodbye, as he appears to have the weakest fan base. Can Sen Nichols supporters prove this criticism wrong?

Although, I must agree that Van had generally a better performance throughout all the performances given by them, it’s still difficult to throw a wild guess who of these two will have to leave soon.

24-year-old Sen Nichols of Taguig and 18-year-old Van Pojas of Cebu are this week’s probationary scholars of Pinoy Dream Academy season 2.

They got the lowest grades after the scholars’ duet with celebrity singers. Sen got 7.29 while Van got 7.30.

Yesterday’s Probation Night still depresses Van. The Heartthrob still couldn’t believe that he is at risk of losing his dream on Saturday. To make this matter worse--if he does lose it--he will be losing it to his best friend in the Academy, Sen.

Inside the boys’ room, the lad couldn’t help but release his frustrations on Bugoy. He feels so disappointed that after all his hard work these past few weeks, a slight crash on his performance last night cost him everything he had worked for. Van couldn’t help but talk to Bugoy with a slight tone of envy.

On the other hand, Sen was having the same conversation with Cris. He kept on repeating to the lass that he badly wants to stay and be part of the Top Six. He was pretty much hopeful that his co-Taguig residents will support him.

Aside from wishful thinking, Sen couldn’t help but share to the Singing Interior Designer a few of his observations. He admitted that he never fails to miss some notes during performances. Unfortunately, these sharps and flats never miss the jurors’ ears either. According to him, he couldn’t understand why some of their co-Scholars could get away with the same mistakes and he couldn’t.

Van and Sen somehow grew distant of each other since this morning. Unlike before where they are almost inseparable, the two now prefer to mingle with other Scholars. The Scholars of the hit reality show "Pinoy Dream Academy" are busy preparing for their 8th Gala Night.

Since this is the culmination of their midterms week, they will be singing songs chosen for them by the Mentors during the upcoming 8th Live Gala Performance, Probation, and Expulsion Night.

The Mentors are challenging the Scholars to level up their game and show everybody what they've got through the songs that they specifically chose for them.

The Mentors chose Anita Baker's "Sweet Love" for Apple, George Michael's "As" for Bugoy, Jordin Sparks' "Tattoo" for Cris, Side A's "Hold On" for Sen, and "Lady Maramalade" from Moulin Rouge for Bunny.

Hoping to see them make use of their voices, the Mentors chose Al Jarreau's "Spain" for Iñaki, Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsoy" for Laarni, The Emotions' "Best Of My Love" for Liezel, Spandau Ballet's "True" for Miguel, Bamboo's "Tatsulok" for Van, and Barbara Streisand's "A Piece Of Sky" for Poy.

As for the weekly showdown between Poy and one of the Scholars, the Honorary Scholar will be facing off with Bugoy this Saturday. The two will be showing off what their vocal chords can do through Regine Velasquez's "Narito Ako."

The much-anticipated first Live Gala Performance Night of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2 was finally held Saturday wherein Pride of Puerto Galera Liezel emerged as the Star Scholar of the week while Stage Performer Inaki and Independent Woman Laarni are the very first Probee Scholars of the week.

Liezel really shone during the Gala Performance Night as her rendition of “Dance with My Father” earned a grade of 8.97 from the distinguished jury of the night composed of multi-awarded composer Louie Ocampo, romantic balladeer Hajji Alejandro, and respected talent manager Girlie Rodis. As this week’s Star Scholar, Liezel’s small dream of giving her aunt a cellphone would be granted.

Completing the Top 5 Scholars of the week are Romantic Crooner Miguel (8.83), Teen Heartthrob Van (8.63), Singing Interior Designer Cris (8.23), and Stylist’s Son Ross (8.00). Cris’ sudden change of song due to her org’s loss in a Recess Game held last week didn’t become a liability as she proved that she is versatile enough to sing any song. Her piece for the week was a jazzed up version of “Papa Oom Mow Mow.”

Four Scholars, on the other hand, failed to impress the jury. Sweet Chanteuse Bea and Small Boy Wonder joined the eventual Probees Inaki and Laarni in the bottom of the list.

Bea, who got a score of 6.40, was too stiff for the jury. Hadji Alejandro advised her to loosen up, as that’s what held her back in her performance. Christian, who received a grade of 5.23, was advised by Girlie Rodis to work on his vocals more. The two were saved by their co-scholars and their Mentors’ votes respectively.

This week’s Probees will depend on the people’s text votes to continue staying and studying in the Academy. Meanwhile, the Pupilars org managed to get a General Point Average (GPA) of 7.88 during the Gala Performance Night. This means that the org will be receiving a weekly allowance of P500 per member, which they can use to buy groceries and other necessities. One Voice, on the other hand, only got a GPA of 6.86. Hence, they would have to do with the basic supplies provided for them like rice, vegetables, and bread.
